How to split rent based on income
Add up every roommate's yearly income. Each person then pays the same percentage of the rent as their percentage of that total. If one person earns $60,000 and the other earns $40,000, the first pays 60% of the rent and the second pays 40%.
An equal split is simpler, but it hits the lower earner harder. An income split keeps the rent-to-income ratio closer for everyone. It does not cover rooms of different sizes. If one bedroom is much larger, agree on a premium for that room first, then split the rest by income.
