Pay

What a salary really pays per hour

$62,400 a year is $30 an hour if, and only if, the job is 40 paid hours a week for 52 weeks. Change the hour base and the same salary is a different wage.

The 2,080-hour year is arithmetic, not a statute: 40 × 52. It became the default because a lot of full-time US jobs are built around a 40-hour week. The Fair Labor Standards Act generally requires overtime pay after 40 hours in a workweek for employees who are not exempt. It does not require an employer to schedule 40 hours, and it does not turn every annual salary into an hourly rate.

Offices that run 8:30 to 5:00 with a half-hour unpaid lunch are still an 8-hour day, so 2,080 still fits. A 37.5-hour week — 7.5 hours a day, which is common when lunch is unpaid and the posted day is shorter — is 1,950 hours a year. $62,400 ÷ 1,950 is $32.00, not $30. If you are comparing an hourly offer at a hospital to a salaried offer at a school, use each job’s real hours. The calculator on our salary to hourly page lets you change hours per week and weeks per year for that reason.

One $62,400 salary, four ways of stating it
StatementGross amount
Hourly at 2,080 hours$30.00
Hourly at 1,950 hours (37.5-hour weeks)$32.00
Biweekly check (26 per year)$2,400
Twice-monthly check (24 per year)$2,600

The check is not the salary divided by 12

Monthly gross on $62,400 is $5,200. Almost nobody is paid that way. Biweekly pay produces 26 checks, so most months you see two deposits of $2,400 and, twice a year, a third. People who budget as if every month has the same two checks get surprised in the months that have three, and they get squeezed in the months that do not.

Twice-monthly pay is 24 checks of $2,600. The annual total matches. The cash-flow does not. When a job ad says “paid biweekly” and a friend says “I get paid twice a month,” they are not describing the same calendar.

Gross hourly is not spendable hourly

Before federal income tax, two payroll taxes come off employee wages in almost every W-2 job: Social Security at 6.2% up to the annual wage cap set by the Social Security Administration, and Medicare at 1.45% with no wage cap. An extra 0.9% Medicare tax can apply above a higher threshold. Your employer withholds federal income tax using IRS Publication 15-T, based on the Form W-4 you filed, not on a single flat percentage you can memorize.

Pre-tax benefits shrink the hourly rate a second time. On this $62,400 salary, a 6% retirement contribution is $3,744 a year, about $1.80 of the $30 gross hour. A health premium of $180 a month is another $2,160 a year, about $1.04 of that hour. Those dollars never arrive in checking, which is the point of a pre-tax deduction, but they also are not available for rent. State income tax, where your state charges it, comes off too.

If you want a rent number, start from what lands in the account, then decide. A gross-pay hourly rate will overstate what an apartment can take. The paycheck calculator is the next step after the hourly conversion. For a single salary spelled out in a short table, the $60,000 conversion and the full chart use the 2,080-hour default and say so.

Unpaid time changes the rate you feel

A nonexempt hourly worker who stays late is, in general, owed overtime. A salaried exempt worker who stays late is often donating the hour. If the exempt job runs 45 hours most weeks, the honest denominator is closer to 2,340 hours (45 × 52) than 2,080. $62,400 ÷ 2,340 is about $26.67. The offer did not shrink. The hour did.

Unpaid leave does the opposite to the math and the same thing to your life: fewer paid weeks means each paid hour is worth more on paper and you have fewer of them. Our salary calculator has fields for paid time off and unpaid leave so you can see that split instead of assuming 52 paid weeks.

Questions people ask

Why do people divide salary by 2,080?

A 40-hour week times 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. $62,400 ÷ 2,080 is exactly $30 an hour. That figure is gross pay, before taxes and before any benefit deductions, and it assumes you are paid for every one of those hours.

Is biweekly pay the same as twice a month?

No. Biweekly is 26 checks a year. Twice a month is 24. On a $62,400 salary the biweekly gross check is $2,400. A twice-monthly gross check is $2,600. Using the wrong divisor makes the offer look richer or poorer than the annual salary.

Does a salaried job pay overtime?

Some do. The Fair Labor Standards Act generally requires overtime after 40 hours in a workweek for nonexempt employees, including some people who are paid a salary. Exempt employees, often called salaried-exempt, usually do not receive overtime. The label on the offer letter is what decides it, not the fact that the pay is stated as an annual number.
